In this interactive, highly hands-on class choice activity, students learn about erosion, deposition, and how rivers effect the land they carve through.
What’s Covered
Using a stream table, students are able to recreate a river ecosystem on a smaller scale. They’ll make hypotheses about which way the river will flow and what areas will be effected by erosion. Then, they’ll fill the stream table with sand, add water, and watch how the water naturally forms a river.
Lessons & Activities
In Raging River, students will take miniature houses (like the houses in Monopoly) and place them along the river’s edge, hypothesizing which houses will be affected as the river grows. They’ll figure out how far away houses must be placed in order to avoid being swept away, and why!
