A longtime favorite of our students, aquatic biology takes lessons that students have learned in the classroom and turn them into real life. Students gain real-world experience working as a biologist, often inspiring them to consider natural science as a field of study or even a career later on!
What’s Covered
Students start out this activity by using field biology skills to observe their environment. There’s a whole lot of science (and a little bit of math!) involved as the students run water tests, like testing the water’s pH or discovering whether the water is polluted or not.
Lessons & Activities
We sure hope your students like getting their hands dirty! In this class, students search for critters (bugs, tadpoles, etc.) in the mud and use a tool called a dichotomous key to decipher what kind of organisms they find. They also use chemicals to test the pH of the water (and watch in awe as it changes colors before their eyes!).
